Open Burning

Open burning in Massachusetts is regulated by the D.E.P. and the local fire department. Open burning is from January 15 to May 1.

The following D.E.P. Regulations must be met:

Open burning must be done:

  • Between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from January 15 to May 1
  • At least 75 feet from all buildings 
  • As close as possible to the source of material being burned
  • When air quality is acceptable for burning.

State fire wardens determine each day whether conditions are safe for open burning. Weather and air quality can change rapidly, especially in the spring, and fire departments can rescind permits when that happens. 

Additionally, the following Norton Fire Department Regulations must be met:

  • Anyone wishing to conduct open burning must have a permit through our permitting website (see side column).
  • You must request permission to burn each day you choose to do so.
  • This must be done through the online system.
  • Permission to burn may be requested from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (do not start burning till 10:00 a.m.

 Open Burning Season is from January 15 to May 1.
